GOTS CERTIFIED

Supply Chain

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognized as the world’s leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers. It defines high-level environmental and social criteria for the entire organic textiles supply chain, from farming to packaging.
  • 1

    Picking

No GMO’s, fungicides, pesticides or insecticides, which means no greenhouse gas emissions, increased soil fertility, saves water & energy, lowers health risks for farmers and end-users.
  • 2

    Weaving

No heavy metals used in the weaving oil, which means lower health risks for factory workers and end-users.
  • 3

    De-Sizing

No synthetic sizing agents, which means lower health risk for factory workers and end-users.
  • 4

    Bleaching

No chlorine bleaching, which means lower health risk for factory workers and end-users.
  • 5

    Dying

Only low impact fiber reactive dyes are used, which means less heat (energy) used, less water used and less waste runoff (lowers health risks for dye house workers and end-users).
  • 6

    Packaging

No PVC and all paper/cardboard used in packaging must be recycled which means reduces waste.

GOOD FOR YOU

Quality & Comfort

Thread count alone is not an accurate indicator of high quality sheets. Cotton staple and thread quality (yarn count and ply) are the most important aspects of a high quality sheet. The highest quality and most comfortable sheets have a thread count between 300-400 and are woven using single-pick insertion with fine single-ply yarn spun from 100% organic long staple cotton.
Fabric made with long staple cotton can be spun into stronger, finer yarn that can produce extremely soft and smooth weaves that fray, pill and wrinkle less and are more durable. Yarn count defines the yarn’s weight and fineness (measured between 30-100 for organic cotton). Homestead sheets use a yarn count between 60-80 which we believe results in the perfect sheets.

The Difference

A cotton staple is a length of cotton fiber. Cotton, being a natural fiber, comes in many staple lengths. We use long staple cotton, which is derived from the Gossypium barbadense species of cotton. This plant yields cotton with unusually long, silky fibers.

Our long staple cotton fiber is then spun into cones of single-ply yarn. Compared to the more common multi-ply yarn, single-ply yarn spun from long staple cotton fiber makes for a stronger and finer yarn that minimizes pilling, produces a really soft feel, and results in a tighter, more durable weave.
This single-ply yarn is then woven into either a percale or a sateen sheet. Percale sheets are cool, crisp, breathable, and very durable – they get softer with every wash. The sateen weave yields a soft and lustrous sheet that feels especially comfortable and luxurious.

GOOD FOR OTHERS

Made Fair For All

Every single Homestead product follows the path of human rights and fair trade practices. This means there is no forced, compulsory or child labor, a right to collective bargaining, no discrimination or abuse, a safe work environment, fair hours, fair wages, ethical recruiting, access to basic needs and services, and a channel to air grievances and concerns.
Homestead only uses Fair Trade Certified Cotton. Everyone who is part of the Homestead family is treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. Our investment in Fair Trade cotton ensures a fund is created for our farmers and enables them to choose how to use the fund within their local communities.

GOOD FOR EARTH

Use Less, Gain More

As of 2015, Organic farming represented only 1% of total global cotton farming. Conventional cotton farming uses 16% of the world’s insecticides and 7% of the world’s pesticides.
We do not use GMO’s, fungicides, pesticides or insecticides, which means no greenhouse gas emissions, and uses 71% less water and 62% less energy than conventional cotton farming.
