So what does all that mean???
Thread count defines the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch. Thread count alone is not an accurate indicator of high quality sheets. Cotton staple and thread quality (yarn count and yarn ply) are the most important aspects of a high quality sheet.
Cotton staple refers to the length of the cotton fiber (short, medium, long, extra-long). The highest staple available for organic cotton is long. Fabric made with long staple cotton can be spun into stronger, finer yarn that can produce extremely soft and smooth weaves that fray, pill and wrinkle less and are more durable.
Yarn count defines the yarn’s weight and fineness (measured between 30-80 for organic cotton). Finer yarn can produce sheets with higher thread counts as more can be woven into a square inch. Yarn count between 30-40 yields a thicker, coarser yarn. Our sheets use a yarn count between 60-80 which we believe results in the perfect intersection of quality and comfort.
Single-ply yarn means there is one yarn in each thread while multi-ply yarn means there is more than one yarn in each thread. Single-ply yarn produces the finest, strongest threads.
The highest thread count you can get using single-ply yarn is between 300-400 and the incremental comfort over 300 is not noticeable.
